Course description

American Sign Language - Level 1

American Sign Language, or ASL for short, is the predominant sign language of Deaf communities in America and Anglo-Canada. It is the fourth most used language in America, being used by deaf people and their families to communicate while becoming increasingly popular among hearing people who have a developing interest in deaf people and want to be able to interact and communicate with friends or colleagues who are hearing impaired.

This course will also give you an insight into the importance of knowing how to communicate in ASL for your profession. For example, if you work in the hospitality and retail sectors you will come across people who have impaired hearing that you will need to communicate with who utilise ASL’s combination of organised hand gestures, movements and facial expressions to create a visual language.

A Brief History of ASL

The language originated in the early 19th century in the American School for the Deaf (ASD) in Hartford, Connecticut. ASD became a state-supported school in 1818, receiving aid of $300,000 from the federal government.

ASL has grown to be spoken by over two million people in North America alone, and is the fourth most studied language in America. You can find more facts about ASL in the course which act as supplementary learning.
