Course Tutor: Justine Holman 

On this course, you’ll be working with 1-2-1 with Justine Holman, who is a professional copywriter and copywriting consultant.

Justine will mentor you through the course, mark your assignments, and give you expert advice whenever you need it.

She has written copy for many large publications, including Elle, The Express, Chat, Women’s Weekly, TV Times and Just 17.

Justine also has experience in running integrated campaigns combining PR, social media and developing content.

Qualification

At the end of this course, successful learners will receive the ABC Awards level 4 diploma in copywriting, and a Learner Unit Summary, which lists the details of all the subjects they have completed as part of the course.

This copywriting course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme.

This lesson explores what a copywriter does, defines the qualities of a good copywriter and explains how to recognise good and bad copy.


Lesson 02: Copy presentation and style

This lesson explores the essential points needed to present copy professionally, and defines what comprises an effective cover page.


Lesson 03: Researching your subject

This lesson explains how to carry out fast, effective and targeted internet research, and apply it to copywriting.


Lesson 04: Terminology

This lesson defines specialist copywriting terminology and explains how to find, and use online glossaries.


Lesson 05: Principles of writing great copy

This lesson defines the qualities needed to make copy attractive and explains how to write effective first sentences.

It also discusses why a copywriter needs a clear advance brief to work from, and defines an effective client brief.


Lesson 06: Writing effective headlines

This lesson defines the qualities of an effective headline, explores the different types of headlines and explains the principles and techniques involved in writing them.


Lesson 07: Writing advertising copy and features

This lesson explores advertising features: what they are, why they are used and why they can be effective.

It lists different types of features and explains how to create original and imaginative subjects for advertising features.

It also explores how to build an advertising feature and demonstrates the writing techniques used to make advertising features effective.

It explains where advertising copy is used, defines the qualities that help advertising copy to have impact and success, and shows you how to write advertising copy for a selected market.


Lesson 08: Writing direct mail

This lesson explains when mailshots can be used effectively, the qualities that help direct mail copy to have impact and success, and how headings can be used effectively.

It also explains how to write direct mail for a selected market.
It defines how email shots are different and explores how to make them effective.


Lesson 9: Writing press releases

This lesson define the qualities that help press releases to have impact and success, and lists the occasions when the use of press releases is appropriate.

It also shows how to write press releases for a selected market and explains the importance of presenting and sending them correctly.

It defines the importance of a press letter and when it can be used effectively.


Lesson 10: Writing for sales and promotion

This lesson explains the techniques used to write promotional copy such as brochures, leaflets, sales proposals and point of sales materials.  


Lesson 11: Writing for search engine optimisation

This lesson covers SEO secrets, strategies and myths and explains how search engines work.

Then, it explores the stages involved in writing an SEO article, demonstrates how to identify key search words and explains how to apply these objectives to SEO articles.


Lesson 12: Writing for social media and blogs

This lesson helps you understand social media basics: how they can increase brand recognition and website traffic, improve search ranking, generate leads, increase sales, provide customer support.

It also explores what a blog is and explains how to set up, maintain and grow your own blog.


Lesson 13: Industry codes of practice

This lesson explains the need for advertising codes of practice, how they work and shows where to find the relevant codes online.


Lesson 14: Finding work

This final lesson shows you what you need to do to get copywriting work, including which strategies you can use to promote your web presence and how to negotiate fees and tie up details of copywriting jobs.
